Meet the Founder

Hungry Hackers is owned and operated by John deGruyter. He started his career with a laptop in one hand and an M-16 in the other. After his service as a computer specialist in the United States Marine Corps, he continued to develop his passion for taking things apart and studying how they work. At a pivotal point in his career, a great experience at a training course propelled him to walk away from what was comfortable and ultimately land his dream job. Now with over two decades in the technology field, John's hunger for learning has developed into a passion for teaching. Today, he gets to use his experience and dedication to excellence to help other Hungry Hackers do what they love.

John has been a guest lecturer at Johns Hopkins University and authored and taught a computer network defense course at The George Washington University. He is an active member and presenter at the NOVA (Northern Virginia) Hackers meetup group. John led a small team that wrote and ran Capture the Flag contests for CarolinaCon, a security conference in Raleigh, NC.
